Seoul Air Base, also designated K-16, is located in Seongnam, Gyeonggi, South Korea. The installation was originally constructed during the Japanese occupation of Korea as Yeouido Air Base. During the Korean War, the United States Air Force (USAF) designated the facility K-16. Units based there during the conflict included the 35th Fighter-Interceptor Group operating F-51s, Detachment F of the 3rd Air Rescue Squadron operating Sikorsky H-5s, and the 2157th Air Rescue Squadron operating Sikorsky H-19s. Yeouido Air Base closed in 1970, and the garrison moved to the current location in Sinchon-ri in February 1971.
The Republic of Korea Air Force (ROKAF) owns and operates the base. It hosts the ROKAF 15th Special Missions Wing and the United States Army 2nd Battalion (Assault), 2nd Aviation Regiment, 2nd Infantry Division. The US Army unit operates Sikorsky UH-60 Blackhawk helicopters. The facility is used as a VIP airfield by the President of the Republic of Korea and visiting heads of state. Infrastructure at the installation includes runways equipped with Instrument Landing Systems (ILS).
