Description
Base aérienne 133 Nancy-Ochey, also known as "Henry Jeandet," is a French Air Force base located in the communes of Ochey and Thuilley-aux-Groseilles, south of Toul and west of Nancy, in the Meurthe-et-Moselle department. Established in 1915, it is one of the oldest French air bases.
During World War I, the base served a purely operational role due to its proximity to the front line, hosting numerous French escadrilles between 1915 and 1918. After the war, the site was abandoned until September 1939, when it was reactivated for French Air Force units, including Groupe de Reconnaissance I/54, Groupe de Chasse III/3, Groupe de Chasse I/2, and Groupe de Reconnaissance I/22.
In June 1940, German forces captured the base. The Luftwaffe used it from April 1943 to August 1944, stationing glider units like Luftlandegeschwader 2 (LLG 2) and Luftlandegeschwader 1 (LLG 1), as well as fighter units like Jagdgeschwader 26 (JG 26) and bomber units like Kampfgeschwader 53 (KG 53) for V1 missile launches.
Allied forces liberated the base on August 20, 1944. It became USAAF Advanced Landing Ground A-96 Toul/Ochey Airfield, hosting the 50th Fighter Group and the 415th Night Fighter Squadron. After the armistice, it served as a collection point for captured German aircraft during Operation Lusty before being returned to France on November 5, 1945.
Construction to accommodate a French Air Force fighter wing began in 1950. The 8th Fighter Wing briefly occupied the base until December 1961, followed by the 7th Fighter Wing, equipped with Mystère IV A aircraft. The base was officially named BA 133 "Henry Jeandet" on January 12, 1962. In August 1967, the 3rd Fighter Wing, comprising 1/3 Navarre and 2/3 Champagne squadrons, moved to Nancy, operating Mirage III E aircraft. A third squadron, 3/3 Ardennes, was created in September 1974, flying Mirage 5 F. The base also hosted the Centre d'Entraînement au Vol Sans Visibilité 338 and the Escadron de défense sol-air 9/950 "Vaucouleurs" with Crotale missiles.
Since March 1994, the base has operated the Mirage 2000D. Its fighter aircraft have participated in operations in Afghanistan (from 2002 to 2012), Libya (2011), and Mali (from 2013 as part of Operation Serval and Operation Épervier). The 3rd Fighter Wing was reactivated on the base on September 5, 2014. The base experienced a severe incident on January 26, 2015, when seven military personnel from Nancy-Ochey died in an F-16 crash during a NATO exercise in Albacete, Spain. On January 9, 2019, a Mirage 2000D from the base crashed in the Jura department, resulting in the deaths of the two crew members. The base also hosts the Escadron de soutien technique aéronautique 15.003 "Malzéville" and Escadrilles Air-Jeunesse. The base has been subject to legal proceedings regarding harassment and sexual violence, leading to convictions for several military personnel in 2022.
