Description
Base aérienne 181 Saint-Denis-La Réunion, also known as "Lieutenant Roland Garros", is a French Air Force base located in the north of La Réunion island, a French overseas department in the Indian Ocean. Since 1973, it has been situated in Sainte-Marie, utilizing the civilian infrastructures of La Réunion Roland-Garros Airport. Briefly named Air Detachment 181 from 2013 to March 1, 2022, it was renamed Base Aérienne 181 Lieutenant Roland Garros in honor of Roland Garros, a Reunionnais who fought in aerial combat during World War I. It serves as the air component of the French Armed Forces in the Southern Indian Ocean Zone and operates two Airbus CN-235 aircraft.
Before 1973, Base Aérienne 181 was located at Ivato International Airport in Madagascar, which gained independence in 1960. Since its establishment in La Réunion, the base has primarily been involved in humanitarian operations, particularly in Madagascar following tropical cyclones. It has also participated in military operations in the Comoros. In 2007, after Cyclone Gamède isolated the south of La Réunion, the base, along with Pierrefonds Airport, established an airlift to supply essential goods to the Saint-Pierre region. In 2013, the base became an air detachment, operating two C-160 Transall aircraft from Transport Squadron 50 "Réunion". In 2015, two Airbus CN-235s replaced the Transalls. On March 1, 2022, it reverted to its status as BA 181.
