GlobalMilitary.net ("we," "us," or "our") operates the website globalmilitary.net. This Privacy Policy explains what information is collected when you visit the website, why, on what legal basis, for how long, who receives it, and what rights you have.

Who Is Responsible

The data controller is the publisher of GlobalMilitary.net, a private individual acting in a non-professional capacity, as described in our Legal Notice. The publisher can be reached at [email protected] for anything concerning this policy or your personal data.

What We Collect, and Why

Server and security logs

Every request to the website is recorded by our web server and by Cloudflare, the network that protects the site. A log line contains your IP address, the page requested, the date and time, the referring URL, and your browser's user-agent string.

Purpose: keeping the site running, detecting abuse, and diagnosing errors
Legal basis: our legitimate interest in operating a secure website (GDPR art. 6(1)(f))
Retention: a rolling 100 MB on our server, after which the oldest entries are overwritten; Cloudflare handles its own network logs under its privacy policy

Audience measurement (Google Analytics 4)

We use Google Analytics to understand which pages are read, from where and on which devices. Google Analytics sets cookies and processes your IP address (truncated by Google before storage), device and browser characteristics, pages viewed, and approximate location.

Purpose: understanding how the site is used in order to improve it
Legal basis: your consent where the law requires it (EEA, United Kingdom, Switzerland — see Your choices below); our legitimate interest elsewhere
Retention: 14 months for user-level data in Google Analytics; aggregated reports are kept indefinitely

When you subscribe to the weekly data-updates digest, we record your email address, the date and time of the signup, and the page you subscribed from. We do not record your IP address.

Purpose: sending you the digest you asked for
Legal basis: your consent (GDPR art. 6(1)(a)), given by submitting the form
Retention: until you unsubscribe. Your address is then kept on a suppression list so that we do not email you again, unless you subscribe afresh later; unused signups are deleted if the digest is discontinued
Unsubscribing: every email we send carries an unsubscribe link, and you can also write to [email protected] at any time. Withdrawing consent is as easy as giving it and does not affect the lawfulness of earlier processing.

Email, suggestions and corrections

If you write to us — including a suggestion or correction sent to [email protected] — we keep the correspondence for as long as needed to answer you and for 12 months afterwards. The substance of an accepted correction may be kept as part of the site's editorial history without any personal data.

Who Receives Your Data

We do not sell personal data and we do not share it with anyone except the service providers that operate parts of the website on our behalf:

Proton AG (Switzerland) — email: our mailbox, and the sending of the weekly digest
Cloudflare, Inc. (USA) — content delivery network, DNS and security layer; sees every request
OVH SAS (France) — hosting of the website's server, located in Canada
OpenStreetMap Foundation (United Kingdom) — map tiles of the nuclear weapons simulator only; your browser requests them directly, which discloses your IP address to the OpenStreetMap tile servers
Google LLC (USA) — Image storage, Google Analytics (audience measurement), Google AdSense (advertising)

Personal data may also be disclosed where the law requires it, for instance to a court or a public authority.

International Transfers

The website's server is hosted by OVH in Canada, our email is processed in Switzerland and the simulator's map tiles are served from the United Kingdom, three countries recognised by the European Commission as providing adequate protection. Cloudflare and Google process data in the United States under the EU–US Data Privacy Framework, to which both are certified, and under the European Commission's standard contractual clauses where applicable.

The Website works with Google AdSense to manage the third-party advertising appearing on the Website. Google and its advertising partners serve advertisements when you visit the Website, which may use first- and third-party cookies. A cookie is a small text file which is sent to your computer or mobile device (referred to in this policy as a "device") by the web server so that a website can remember some information about your browsing activity on the Website.

First-party cookies are created by the website that you are visiting. A third-party cookie is frequently used in behavioral advertising and analytics and is created by a domain other than the website you are visiting. Third-party cookies, tags, pixels, beacons and other similar technologies (collectively, "Tags") may be placed on the Website to monitor interaction with advertising content and to target and optimize advertising. Children's Privacy

The website is not directed at children. We do not knowingly collect personal data from anyone under 15 (the age of digital consent in France) and, if we learn that we have, we delete it.

Security

We implement reasonable technical measures to protect information: the site is served over HTTPS only, the server accepts traffic only through Cloudflare, and the spreadsheet holding newsletter signups is accessible only to the publisher. No internet transmission is completely secure, and we cannot guarantee absolute security.
