Description
Base Aérienne 273 Romorantin-Pruniers, also known as « Lieutenant-colonel Mailfert », is a French Air and Space Force base located in Pruniers-en-Sologne, Loir-et-Cher. The site's aviation history dates back to 1911 with the creation of a military aeronautical station. During World War I, from September 1917, the Americans established a large General Intermediate Supply Depot (G.I.S.D.) on the site, which included facilities for aircraft assembly, mounting, and testing, along with extensive logistical support. After the war, this became a major center for aircraft restoration and repair. On January 1, 1920, it was formally established as the General Aviation Store No. 3 (MGA n°3), later becoming Air Force Depot 304 in 1939. The base was heavily bombed during World War II and occupied by the Luftwaffe from June 1940 until its liberation in August 1944. The Air Force Depot 602 (EAA 602) was created on December 15, 1944. The base officially received the name « Lieutenant-Colonel Georges Mailfert » on August 11, 1961. The base was dissolved on July 1, 2002, becoming Air Detachment 273 (DA 273), but regained its status as an air base on January 1, 2022. BA 273 specializes in techno-logistical support within the defense aeronautical supply chain. It houses the Groupe Entrepôt des Matériels en Approvisionnement (GEMA), which is the central organization for receiving, storing, and shipping aeronautical equipment for the French Air Force, managing approximately 25 million items. The GEMA also includes the Inter-Armed Platform (PFIA) for ground transport, coordinating national and regional logistical flows. The Centre de Documentation Technique de l'Armée de l'air (CDTAA) manages and disseminates technical documentation essential for aircraft airworthiness. The Escadron d’Instruction au Vol à Voile « Chambord » 21.535 (EIVV) provides initial flight training for Air Force officer cadets, pre-selection for air accident investigators, and general aviation familiarization for Air Force personnel. Other units include the Groupement d’Appui à l’Activité (GAA) which oversees technical support, fire safety, armament management, and logistical maintenance, and the Bureau ressources humaines (BRH) for human resources management. The base is also the custodian of the flags of the 62nd Transport Wing and the 32nd Bombardment Wing.
