Description
Salon-de-Provence Air Base 701, named "Général Pineau", is a facility operated by the French Air and Space Force. The base was established in 1936 as "Base-école no 356", initially hosting the 130th Air Battalion. The French Air Force Academy (École de l'air) was transferred to the site from Versailles in 1937, followed by the Air Force Commissary School in 1953.
The base's function is centered on the training and education of French military officers. It houses the École de l'air, the main academy for officer cadets of the French Air and Space Force. Since 2013, the base also hosts the École des commissaires des armées (ECA), which is responsible for training commissaries for all branches of the French Armed Forces. Other training entities stationed on the base include the Centre de formation aéronautique militaire initiale (CFAMI) for initial military aeronautical training, and the Centre d'enseignement militaire supérieur air (CEMS Air) for advanced military air studies.
The base is home to the presentation teams of the French Air and Space Force. The Patrouille de France aerobatic display team has been stationed at Salon-de-Provence since 1964. The Équipe de voltige de l'Armée de l'air et de l'espace (the aerobatic team) is also based here. A memorial to aviator Georges Guynemer is located on the installation.
