Description

The École des Pupilles de l'Air et de l'Espace 749 « Élève Jacques Lorenzi », also known as EPAE or Air Base 749 Grenoble-Montbonnot, is one of six Defense high schools under the French Ministry of Armed Forces. It is the sole high school and middle school operated by the French Air and Space Force. The school was established in 1941 in the Free Zone. It is named after Jacques Lorenzi, the first student to die for France at the age of 15 during the Liberation of Paris in August 1944. Until December 1986, the school was located in Grenoble, before relocating to Montbonnot-Saint-Martin on a 21-hectare site. In September 1995, the activities of the 'Maison des ailes' institution for young girls from Echouboulains were transferred to the Montbonnot-Saint-Martin site following its closure.

The school hosts a middle school, a high school, and preparatory classes for military 'grandes écoles'. Students in preparatory classes are under contract with the French Armed Forces, committing to join a military school such as the École de l'air et de l'espace, École navale, St-Cyr, École polytechnique, or ENSTA Bretagne, in exchange for free tuition. The middle and high school primarily serve children of Air and Space Force personnel, especially those who lost a parent in service, as well as children of civil servants and scholarship recipients.

The military personnel manage the boarding school and infrastructure, with the school directed by a colonel and its hierarchy identical to other air bases. The site includes various facilities such as a medical service, student mess halls, a command post, staff housing, a barber shop, a cinema, a laundry, and an Air and Space Gendarmerie post ensuring site access control. Sports facilities include tennis courts, football fields, a rugby field, a swimming pool, a gymnasium, an athletics track, and an outdoor basketball court. Air sports instruction, specifically gliders, is available to preparatory class students, leading to civil aviation licenses. All physical education teachers are military personnel. Students wear a uniform provided by the school, which varies in color to distinguish between middle schoolers (red), high schoolers (blue), and preparatory class students (green). Preparatory class students have a specific uniform including a name tag and the 'Classes de l'Air' insignia. They also wear the insignia of the Air and Space Force squadron sponsoring their promotion, which is presented during a traditional 'promotion baptism' ceremony.
