Description

Base Aérienne 942 Lyon-Mont Verdun, also known as Mont Verdun, is a military air base of the French Air and Space Force located atop Mont Verdun, approximately 15 km from Lyon. It serves as the primary operational site for the Air Defense and Air Operations Command and is a critical hub for French air defense. The base is also one of four validation centers for NATO's new integrated Air Command and Control System (ACCS). Classified as a highly sensitive defense zone, it houses 1,300 personnel and facilities including the National Air Operations Center (CNOA), a control center for the Strategic Air Forces (FAS) and Strategic Ocean Force (FOST), and the Detection and Control Center 05.942, which oversees the southeastern quarter of France. The base is named after Captain Jean Robert, a pilot who died in combat on June 4, 1940. The site includes two surveillance and air defense radars, one of which is a Ground Master 406 inaugurated in 2023, and an underground facility. The base was established following a decision in 1952, with construction beginning in 1956, and became active in 1960. It received its current designation, BA 942, in 1964. Since September 1, 2007, it has hosted the CNOA, which synthesizes information from military detection and control centers to assess threats and coordinate interception missions. In October 2010, the Center for Analysis and Simulation for Air Operations Preparation (CASPOA), an air operations training school, joined the complex. In 2012, the Air Intelligence Center (CRA) was relocated to BA 942. Since 2008, the Joint Force Air Component Commander (JFACC), a deployable center for external operations and major exercises, has also been stationed there. In 2022, BA 942 assumed command of the Air component of the NATO Response Force (NRF) for one year.
