Description
Belém Air Force Base (Base Aérea de Belém) is located in the state of Pará, Brazil, situated 12 km from downtown Belém in the Val-de-Cans neighborhood. The facility shares infrastructure with Val-de-Cans/Júlio Cezar Ribeiro International Airport and is operated by the Brazilian Air Force.
The base originated with the creation of the 7th Aviation Regiment on June 30, 1936. Initial operations were conducted from a provisional site in the Souza neighborhood until 1938, when construction began on the aerodrome at Val-de-Cans. The base was formally established by Decree 6,814 on August 21, 1944. Following the 1958 establishment of the Correio Aéreo Nacional da Amazônia, the installation became a center for regional integration and humanitarian services throughout the Amazonian region.
Current operations involve units from the Brazilian Air Force and the Brazilian Navy. The Brazilian Air Force maintains the 1st Squadron of the 3rd Aviation Group (3°/7°GAv), which operates P-95BM Bandeirulha aircraft. The 1st Squadron of Air Transportation (1°ETA) is also stationed at the base, utilizing C-95BM and CM Bandeirante, C-97 Brasília, and C-98A Grand Caravan aircraft. Naval operations are conducted by the Brazilian Navy's 1st Squadron of Helicopters for General Use in the North (HU41), which utilizes UH-15 Super Cougar helicopters. Retired aircraft previously operated from the facility include the Consolidated CA-10 Catalina and the Douglas C-47 Dakota.
