Description

Birjand International Airport is located near Birjand in the South Khorasan province of Iran. Established in 1933, it was the third operational airport in the country. Initial operations utilized small aircraft. The first passenger terminal opened in 1976, coinciding with the commencement of flights to Tehran and Mashhad by Pars Air. Between 1963 and 1983, the facility underwent development including the construction of a cargo terminal, police station, weather forecast station, and an air control tower. The airport attained international status in June 2008 following its first flight to Medina, Saudi Arabia.

The facility is owned by the Government of Iran and is jointly operated by the Iran Airports Company and the Iranian Air Force. It serves a dual role as a public and military airport. Scheduled commercial services are maintained by carriers including Iran Air, Iran Airtour, Mahan Air, Pars Air, and Yazd Airways, with regular flights to Tehran and Mashhad.

Infrastructure consists of two passenger terminals, a cargo terminal, and flight control facilities. In 2009, runway 10/28 was refurbished and extended to accommodate larger aircraft. The facility has hosted aircraft types including the Airbus A300.
