Description
Bradley International Airport, historically known as Bradley Field, is a public international airport located in Windsor Locks, Connecticut, United States. Owned and operated by the Connecticut Airport Authority, it serves as the busiest commercial airport in Connecticut and the second-busiest in New England. The airport is situated approximately halfway between Hartford, Connecticut, and Springfield, Massachusetts. It operates as a dual-use military facility, hosting the 103rd Airlift Wing of the Connecticut Air National Guard, which operates C-130 Hercules aircraft. Additionally, the Connecticut Army National Guard's 169th, 104th, and 142nd Aviation Regiments are stationed here, utilizing UH-60 Blackhawk, CH-47 Chinook, and C-12 Huron aircraft. The Connecticut Wing Civil Air Patrol's 103rd Composite Squadron also operates from the airport.
The airport's origins trace back to a 1940 land acquisition by Connecticut, which was transferred to the U.S. Army in 1941 for war preparations. The airfield was named after Lt. Eugene M. Bradley, who died in a training accident in August 1941. Civil use began in 1947, with its first commercial flight by Eastern Air Lines. By 1948, American Airlines and United Airlines had shifted their services to Bradley, establishing it as the primary airport for the Hartford/Springfield area. The Murphy Terminal, opened in 1952, served for decades before its closure in 2010 and subsequent demolition. A new Terminal A and the Bradley Sheraton Hotel were completed in 1986. The airport underwent a Terminal Improvement Project in the early 2000s, expanding Terminal A and adding a new International Arrivals Building in 2002. In 2022, a $210 million Ground Transportation Center opened, consolidating rental car facilities and adding parking. Bradley International Airport features two asphalt runways: 06/24, measuring 2,899 meters, and 15/33, measuring 2,087 meters. The airport covers 984 hectares with an elevation of 53 meters.
