Description
Canadian Forces Base Kingston is located on the east bank of the Cataraqui River in Barriefield, Ontario. The installation was established in 1914 as Barriefield Military Camp at the onset of the First World War. In 1937, the base expanded with the opening of Vimy Barracks, which became the station for the Royal Canadian Corps of Signals and the Signal Training Centre. During the Second World War, the Royal Canadian Ordnance Corps established a training centre at the site. Following the war, the northern portion of the camp was designated McNaughton Barracks, hosting the Royal Canadian Electrical and Mechanical Engineers School from 1945 to 1969. The facility was renamed Canadian Forces Base Kingston in 1966. In 1988, the 1st Canadian Division Headquarters was established at the base to function as a staging point for the deployment of personnel and materiel for active operations.
The base is operated by the Canadian Army. Since June 1997, it has hosted the headquarters for 1 Wing, a Royal Canadian Air Force unit. The base functions primarily as a training and support facility for various lodger units. Stationed units include the Canadian Army Doctrine and Training Centre, 1st Canadian Division Headquarters, the Peace Support Training Centre, and the Princess of Wales' Own Regiment. Communications and electronics units based at the facility include the Canadian Forces School of Communications and Electronics, the Canadian Forces Joint Signal Regiment, and 21 Electronic Warfare Regiment. Additional units include the Canadian Forces Joint Operations Group, the Canadian Forces Joint Support Group, and the Canadian Defence Academy.
Infrastructure at the base is organized around the Vimy and McNaughton Barracks complexes. The facility includes the Military Communications and Electronics Museum and several recognized federal heritage buildings, including Lewis Hall, Sherman Hall, and Beament Hall. 1 Wing operates squadrons of CH-146 Griffon tactical helicopters, with its headquarters situated at the base while its squadrons are positioned at various Canadian Forces bases. The installation provides support services for its integral units and acts as the designated support base for the Royal Military College of Canada.
