Description

Chandigarh Airport, officially Shaheed Bhagat Singh International Airport, is an international airport in India that serves the union territory of Chandigarh. It is located in Jhiurheri, Mohali, Punjab, and shares space with the Indian Air Force. The airport is operated by Chandigarh International Airport Limited (CHIAL), a joint venture company involving the Airports Authority of India (51%), the Government of Punjab (24.5%), and the Government of Haryana (24.5%).

Civil and commercial operations at Chandigarh Airport began in the 1970s from the civil enclave of the Indian Air Force Station. A new civil airport building was constructed and opened on April 14, 2011. This terminal was designated a customs airport on August 19, 2011. In 2008, land was acquired for a new terminal, which was completed in 2015. The new terminal, inaugurated on September 11, 2015, became operational on October 19, 2015. It includes two link taxiways to the terminal and cargo complex, with an additional taxiway added in April 2022 to increase aircraft handling capacity. The terminal features five bays with aerobridges and eight remote parking stands. The airport operates 24 hours a day since April 10, 2019. The single runway, 11/29, underwent a major upgrade and repair, completed on April 9, 2019. It is 3,170 meters (10,400 feet) long with an asphalt surface. Additional runway approach lighting was installed in 2021 to aid landings in foggy conditions. The runway is equipped with 900 AFLS, 02 ILS, CAT I ILS at Runway 11, and CAT-II at Runway 29. The airport also includes an integrated common use cargo terminal with five buildings, one designated for perishable goods.

The Indian Air Force maintains a presence at the airport, which is listed under the Western Air Command of the Indian Air Force.
