Description
Chilas Airfield is located in Chilas, Diamer District, in the Gilgit-Baltistan region of Pakistan. The British Raj established the airfield in 1927 to facilitate the movement of troops and government officials. Following independence, the Frontier Works Organisation developed the site to support the construction of the Karakoram Highway. The Frontier Works Organisation and the Pakistan Air Force utilized the airfield for operations until 1970.
The Pakistan Airports Authority operates the facility. A board comprising officials from the Pakistan Civil Aviation Authority, the Water and Power Development Authority (WAPDA), and the Pakistan Air Force oversees the airfield. Its current role is to provide logistical support and air access for WAPDA and China Power Investment Corporation personnel involved in the construction of the Diamer-Bhasha Dam. The airfield is situated within the catchment area of the Diamer-Bhasha Dam.
