Description
Cần Thơ Airfield, also known as Cần Thơ Base Camp, is located west of Cần Thơ in the Mekong Delta region of southern Vietnam. Established in the 1930s during the French colonial period, the facility was occupied by Japanese forces during World War II. During the Vietnam War, the site was used by the U.S. Army, U.S. Air Force (USAF), Army of the Republic of Vietnam (ARVN), and Republic of Vietnam Air Force (RVNAF).
The base was established by the 9th Infantry Division. U.S. operations included Detachment 3 of the 6220th Air Base Squadron and Detachment 7 of the 8th Aerial Port Squadron. In July 1963, a detachment of the 33rd Tactical Group replaced the 6220th Air Base Squadron detachment. Other units hosted at the base included the 52nd Signal Battalion, Battery H of the 29th Artillery, and the 6th Battalion, 77th Artillery. Aviation units included the 13th Aviation Battalion and the 18th, 235th, 244th, and 271st Aviation Companies, alongside the 191st Assault Helicopter Company and Troop C, 16th Cavalry.
The RVNAF 74th Tactical Wing was established at the airfield in April 1964. Aircraft operated from the site included O-1 Bird Dogs flown by detachments of the RVNAF 122nd Liaison Squadron and the USAF 19th Tactical Air Support Squadron. Air traffic control was managed by Detachment 3 of the 619th Tactical Control Squadron until June 1972. The base hosted the ARVN 9th Division until April 1975.
The facility is currently operated by the People’s Army of Vietnam (PAVN) as the headquarters of the 9th Military Region. The airfield is no longer in use for aviation operations but remains visible on satellite imagery.
