Description
Changchun Dafangshen Airport, also known as Dafangshen Air Base, is a People's Liberation Army Air Force base located in Changchun, Jilin province, China. Originally constructed in 1941 by the Empire of Japan, it served as the airport for Xinjing, the capital of Manchukuo, replacing the older Kuanchengzi Airport. During World War II, a Soviet airborne force captured the airport in August 1945. Following the Soviet withdrawal in April 1946, the Northeast People's Liberation Army took control, but was subsequently driven out by the Kuomintang army in May 1946. During the Chinese Civil War's Liaoshen Campaign, the Northeast People's Liberation Army besieged Changchun, capturing and damaging Dafangshen in May 1948 to prevent its use for supplies by Kuomintang forces. Most of the airport's buildings and facilities were destroyed in the fighting.
After the establishment of the People's Republic of China in 1949, Dafangshen Airport was utilized for pilot training by the Second Aviation Academy of the People's Liberation Army Air Force. It was later expanded for civil aviation, becoming Changchun's public airport in October 1960 and replacing Datun Airport. It operated as a dual-use airport until 27 August 2005, when all commercial flights were transferred to the newly built Changchun Longjia International Airport. Since then, Dafangshen Airport has reverted to sole military use, operated by the People's Liberation Army Air Force.
