Description

Darbhanga Airport is a domestic airport and an Indian Air Force Station located in Darbhanga, Bihar, India. It was originally built by Maharaja Kameshwar Singh Bahadur of Darbhanga for his private airline, Darbhanga Aviation, which started operations in 1950 and became defunct in 1962. During the 1962 Indo-China War, the airport was acquired by the Indian Air Force. It is currently operated by the Airports Authority of India (AAI) for civilian flights, which commenced on 8 November 2020 under the UDAN scheme. The AAI has undertaken significant infrastructure improvements, including strengthening the runway to handle Airbus A320 and Boeing 737 aircraft, constructing an interim terminal building, a taxi track, and an apron. An apron measuring 167 mt x 62 mt became operational in February 2021, capable of accommodating two B737-800/A320 aircraft simultaneously. Future expansion plans include the development of a new, larger passenger terminal, a new Air Traffic Control (ATC) tower, cargo facilities, and the extension of the runway from 2,743 meters to 3,700 meters to accommodate widebody aircraft like the Airbus A380. Construction on the new terminal began in October 2024, with an estimated completion by September 2026.
