Description
The airport was originally built in 1931 for the air force of the Sichuan warlord Liu Xiang. It was later integrated into the Republic of China Air Force and served as an operational base for fighter squadrons and as a training site for B-10 bomber crews during the Second Sino-Japanese War.
From July 1944 to August 1945, the airfield was used by the United States Army Air Forces. The Tenth Air Force’s 312th Fighter Wing was based there, commanding the 33rd, 81st, and 311th Fighter Groups. The airfield also supported Twentieth Air Force B-29 Superfortress staging operations for bombing missions. The USAAF 426th Night Fighter Squadron operated P-61 Black Widow aircraft from the base, providing night air defense for the area.
In December 1949, Chiang Kai-shek departed from this airport for Taiwan. The base has been under the control of the People's Liberation Army Air Force (PLAAF) since 1949 and remains an active military installation. It is currently garrisoned by the PLAAF's Western Theater Command Air Force.
