Description
Florianópolis Air Force Base (BAFL) is located in Santa Catarina, Brazil, 14 km from downtown Florianópolis. It shares infrastructure with Hercílio Luz International Airport. The facility was established in 1923 by the Brazilian Navy as the Center for Air Naval Aviation of Santa Catarina, originally operating amphibian aircraft. Between 1927 and 1932, the site, then known as Campeche Aerodrome, was used by the Compagnie Générale Aéropostale. Jurisdiction was transferred to the Brazilian Air Force in 1941. During World War II, the installation conducted anti-submarine surveillance missions along the southern coast of Brazil.
The base is owned and controlled by the Brazilian Air Force. Since January 2017, it has had no permanent flying units assigned and functions as a support facility for air units of the Brazilian Air Force, Navy, and Army. Historical units assigned to the base include the 2nd Squadron of the 10th Aviation Group from 1972 to 1980 and the 2nd Squadron of the 7th Aviation Group from 1982 to 2017.
