Description

Fuzhou Yixu Airport is a military airport located on the south side of Gaogai Mountain, Nantai Island, Cangshan District, near downtown Fuzhou, Fujian Province, China. It was constructed in 1944 by Japanese forces during their occupation of Fuzhou to establish air supremacy. Following the end of World War II, the airport was taken over by the Air Force of the Republic of China. It was converted to civilian use on January 15, 1948, and subsequently taken over by the Chinese People's Liberation Army a year later. On December 1, 1974, it became a military-civilian dual-use airport. Initially, it was a simple, small airport with poor basic equipment, capable of handling only small aircraft during the day. An expansion project completed on February 25, 1982, extended the main runway to 2,400 meters, thickened it, enlarged aprons and parallel slides, and added blind landing equipment and radars, enabling it to accommodate larger aircraft for day and night operations. Due to clearance limitations and the inability to expand further, as well as frequent takeoffs and landings causing runway cracks and foundation sinking, Yixu Airport transitioned to a purely military airport after the opening of Fuzhou Changle International Airport on June 23, 1997. The airport's location near the city center and surrounded by mountains often results in poor air quality, fog, and frequent bad weather, making landings challenging. Notable incidents include a collision on June 16, 1987, between a Boeing 737 Advanced and a Shenyang J-6, resulting in the J-6 pilot's death, and a McDonnell Douglas MD-82 overrunning the runway on October 26, 1993, killing two occupants.
