Description

Boise Airport, also known as Boise Air Terminal or Gowen Field, is a joint civil-military airport located three miles south of downtown Boise, Idaho. Opened in 1936, it is operated by the city of Boise Department of Aviation and serves as the busiest airport in the state. The airport covers 5,000 acres and has an elevation of 875 meters. It features two asphalt runways: 10L/28R measuring 3,048 meters and 10R/28L measuring 2,976 meters, in addition to an asphalt helipad, H1.

During World War II, the U.S. Army Air Forces leased the field for training B-17 and B-24 bomber crews, and it was named Gowen Field in 1941 after 1st Lt. Paul R. Gowen. After the war, the Idaho Air National Guard began leasing the airfield, and it continues to host military operations. The primary military unit stationed at Gowen Field Air National Guard Base is the 124th Fighter Wing, which operates A-10 Thunderbolt II aircraft. The airport also supports the National Interagency Fire Center and the United States Forest Service for aerial firefighting.

Boise Airport underwent significant remodeling between 2001 and 2005, resulting in a new terminal with two concourses and 24 gates. A new 295-foot air traffic control tower opened in 2013. The airport also serves as a focus city for Alaska Airlines. In 2024, a steel-framed hangar under construction collapsed, resulting in fatalities and injuries.
