Description
Cen Cun is a military air base located in the Tianhe District of Guangzhou, Guangdong Province. The air base was constructed by the Japanese military in 1945 during the Second Sino-Japanese War. Its purpose was to serve as a decoy airfield to divert Allied bombing raids from the nearby Tianhe Airport. After the Chinese Civil War, the airfield was repurposed in 1949 as a training base for the People's Liberation Army Air Force, falling under the administration of the Guangzhou Military Region Air Force.
The air base is currently operational. An agreement to relocate the facility was signed between the Southern Theater Command Air Force and the Guangdong Provincial Government in September 2017. The base is operated by the People's Liberation Army Southern Theater Command Air Force. It is specifically managed by Unit 95171.
From 2002 until the end of 2012, the air base also hosted the Guangdong Provincial Public Security Department's Police Aviation Flight Team, which operated several types of helicopters before moving to a different base The primary military function of the installation is to serve as an air force training base. Its flight operations impose aviation height restrictions on construction in the surrounding area.
