Description
Joint Base Charleston is a United States military facility located in North Charleston and Goose Creek, South Carolina. Established on October 1, 2010, it resulted from the amalgamation of Charleston Air Force Base and Naval Support Activity Charleston, following recommendations from the 2005 Base Realignment and Closure Commission. The facility is under the jurisdiction of the United States Air Force's Air Mobility Command, with the 628th Air Base Wing serving as the host unit for installation support. The base covers over 20,877 acres and supports 67 Military Commands and Federal Agencies, providing services to over 79,000 personnel.
Joint Base Charleston operates as a joint civil-military airport, sharing its runways with Charleston International Airport for commercial and general aviation operations. The 437th Airlift Wing and its Air Force Reserve Command associate, the 315th Airlift Wing, operate C-17 Globemaster III strategic airlift aircraft from the base, supporting global airlift missions. The Naval Support Activity Charleston portion of the joint base is the largest of three Naval Weapons Stations on the U.S. East Coast. It hosts numerous Navy commands, including the Naval Information Warfare Center Atlantic (NIWC Atlantic), Naval Nuclear Power Training Command, and the Naval Consolidated Brig. The base also serves as an Army logistics hub and a home port for Coast Guard National Security Cutters and Ready Reserve Force ships. Runways include 15/33, measuring 2,743.5 meters (9,001 feet) with a concrete surface, and 03/21, measuring 2,133.6 meters (7,000 feet) with a concrete surface.
