Description
Joint Base Langley–Eustis is a United States military facility located adjacent to Hampton and Newport News, Virginia. It was established on October 1, 2010, through the amalgamation of the United States Air Force's Langley Air Force Base and the United States Army's Fort Eustis, following recommendations from the 2005 Base Realignment and Closure Commission. While merged into a single joint base, the two components are geographically separated by 17 miles. The 633rd Air Base Wing was reactivated in January 2010 to serve as the host unit, assuming installation support functions for both locations, achieving full operational capability in October 2010.
Langley Air Force Base, originally built in 1917 as Langley Field, is home to JBLE's Air Force units, including the Headquarters of Air Combat Command (ACC). It hosts three fighter squadrons, one fighter training squadron, and intelligence units. Notable flying units include the 27th Fighter Squadron and 94th Fighter Squadron, both operating F-22 Raptors, and the 71st Fighter Training Squadron with T-38 Talons. The F-22 Raptor Demo Team is also based here. Fort Eustis, established in 1918 as Camp Abraham Eustis, serves as a training ground for Army service members in transportation, aviation maintenance, logistics, and deployment doctrine. It is home to the Transportation Regiment and the 128th Aviation Brigade.
Key units stationed at the joint base include the 633rd Air Base Wing, 1st Fighter Wing, 363rd Intelligence, Surveillance and Reconnaissance Wing, 480th Intelligence, Surveillance and Reconnaissance Wing, 7th Transportation Brigade (Expeditionary), and the Headquarters of United States Army Training and Doctrine Command. The base also hosts elements from the Air Force Reserve Command, Air National Guard, Civil Air Patrol, United States Coast Guard, Department of Defense, and National Aeronautics and Space Administration. The airfield features a single concrete runway, 08/26, measuring 10,002 feet (3,049 meters).
