Description
Joint Base Pearl Harbor–Hickam (JBPHH) is a United States military base situated on the island of Oahu, Hawaii. It was formed in 2010 through the amalgamation of the United States Air Force's Hickam Air Force Base and the United States Navy's Naval Station Pearl Harbor, as part of the 2005 Base Realignment and Closure Commission. The Naval Station Pearl Harbor component was established in 1899, while Hickam Field was built in 1938. The base is currently operational and serves as a dual-use facility, sharing its airfield with Daniel K. Inouye International Airport.
JBPHH is operated by the U.S. Navy and controlled by Navy Region Hawaii. Its primary garrison units include Navy Region Hawaii and the 647th Air Base Group. Key commands and units stationed at JBPHH include the United States Pacific Fleet, Commander, Submarine Force, U.S. Pacific Fleet, Commander, Naval Surface Force Pacific, Pearl Harbor Naval Shipyard, Pacific Air Forces (which is headquartered on base), the 15th Wing, and the Hawaii Air National Guard's 154th Wing. The base also hosts elements of the U.S. Space Force, U.S. Army, and various Department of Defense agencies such as US Indo-Pacific Command and the Defense Logistics Agency.
Naval Station Pearl Harbor provides berthing, shore-side support, maintenance, and training for surface ships and submarines, accommodating the largest vessels in the fleet. Hickam Air Force Base functions as a launch point for strategic air mobility and operational missions. The base has an elevation of 3.9 meters (13 ft) and features six runways, including four asphalt runways (8L/26R, 8R/26L, 4R/22L, 4L/22R) and two water runways (8W/26W, 4W/22W). The facility also manages groundwater sources that supply water to military housing and associated facilities.
