Description
Joint Base San Antonio (JBSA) is a United States military facility located in San Antonio, Texas. The facility is under the jurisdiction of the United States Air Force 502d Air Base Wing, Air Education and Training Command (AETC). The 502d Air Base Wing serves as the host unit, performing the installation support mission across the three primary bases that form JBSA.
JBSA was established on October 1, 2010, resulting from congressional legislation implementing recommendations of the 2005 Base Realignment and Closure Commission. This legislation ordered the consolidation of three nearby, but previously separate, military installations into a single joint base. These merged facilities include the United States Army's Fort Sam Houston, and the United States Air Force's Randolph Air Force Base and Lackland Air Force Base. Component facilities also include Kelly Field Annex, Chapman Training Annex, Camp Bullis, Seguin Auxiliary Air Field, and Camp Stanley. Fort Sam Houston's history dates back to 1876, with other components established in 1917, 1927, and 1941.
JBSA supports a population of 80,000 personnel and accommodates up to 138,000 students annually. It is one of the largest single Department of Defense installations, with a Plant Replacement Value of approximately $10.3 billion, an annual budget of $800 million, and a workforce exceeding 8,000 personnel. It interfaces with 1,000 civic leaders, 20 smaller communities, four counties, and four Congressional Districts, supporting over 266 mission partners and more than 250,000 other personnel, including retired general officers.
Key units stationed at JBSA include the Headquarters Air Education and Training Command, 59th Medical Wing, 37th Training Wing, 12th Flying Training Wing, Headquarters Sixteenth Air Force, 67th Cyberspace Wing, 433d Airlift Wing, 149th Fighter Wing, Headquarters US Army Medical Command, Brooke Army Medical Center, US Army Medical Center of Excellence, Headquarters US Army Installation Management Command, Headquarters US Army South, Headquarters US Army North, and the Texas Cryptologic Center. The primary mission at Fort Sam Houston is medical training and support, while Lackland Air Force Base is the Air Force's sole site for enlisted basic military training. Randolph Air Force Base serves as the headquarters for Air Education and Training Command.
