Description
Larissa Air Base is located in the city of Larissa, the capital of the Thessaly region in central Greece. The location has functioned as a military base since the Ottoman period, when it served as the primary military center for the region. It was used as the headquarters for Hursid Pasha during the Greek War of Independence and later served as the headquarters for the Greek Crown Prince Constantine during the Greco-Turkish War of 1897. The airfield was operational during World War II.
The base currently hosts the Hellenic Air Force Headquarters and serves as the site for the NATO Headquarters in Greece. It is designated as a military national airport. Operational infrastructure at the installation includes a military hospital and the Military Veterinary Museum of Larissa.
