Description
Pune Airport, also known as Lohagaon Air Force Station, is an international airport and Indian Air Force (IAF) base located at Lohagaon, approximately 11 km northeast of Pune, Maharashtra, India. The airport operates as a civil enclave managed by the Airports Authority of India on the western side of the Lohagaon Air Force Station. The airfield was established in 1939 as RAF Poona, providing air security to Mumbai. During World War II, it hosted squadrons of de Havilland Mosquito and Vickers Wellington bombers, and Supermarine Spitfire fighter aircraft. In May 1947, the Royal Indian Air Force assumed control of the airfield. The airport features a 2,540 m long runway oriented 10/28, with a former secondary runway now used as a taxiway by the IAF. A 2,200 m parallel taxiway was constructed for civil operations. Air traffic control at Pune Airport is managed by the IAF, which involves coordination between the Airports Authority of India and the IAF regarding flight schedules and night landings. The airport is equipped with night landing facilities and navigational aids such as DVOR/DME and NDB. A second terminal was completed and inaugurated in March 2024, becoming operational in July 2024.
