Description
Luleå Air Base, officially Luleå/Kallax Airport, is located seven kilometers south-southeast of Luleå, Sweden, near the village of Kallax. The facility was established in 1941 as the military airfield for the Norrbotten Wing (F 21). Civilian flight operations to Stockholm commenced on September 11, 1944. Winter operations were established in 1948 following the construction of a hangar and the installation of runway lighting. International charter operations began at the site in 1969.
The base functions as a joint military and public airport. Swedavia serves as the civilian operator, while the Norrbotten Wing (F 21) is the military unit stationed at the facility and utilizes the runway for flight operations.
Infrastructure at the site includes a hangar designed for winter operations and a terminal building opened in 1984. The runway was extended in 1999 to support cargo flight requirements. The base hosts cargo operations and scheduled passenger services by airlines including Scandinavian Airlines, Norwegian Air Shuttle, and Zimex Aviation.
