Description

Mirim Airport, also designated as Pyongyang East Airfield or K-24 Air Base, is located in Mirim-dong, Sadong-guyok, on the eastern edge of Pyongyang along the Taedong River. The Imperial Japanese Army Air Service established the airfield in the 1940s. During the Korean War, United Nations forces occupied the facility in late 1950, during which time the United States Air Force designated the base K-24. Units stationed there during this period included the 18th Fighter-Bomber Wing, the 6002nd Tactical Support Wing, and a detachment of the 3rd Air Rescue Squadron. The South African Air Force 2 Squadron also operated F-51s from the site. In May 1952, the North Korean Air Force 272nd Construction Unit lengthened the runway under the direction of Soviet advisors.

The Korean People's Army Air Force owns and controls the installation. The airfield primarily serves as a staging ground for military parades and houses the Mirim Parade Training Facility. Since 2016, the Mirim Air Club has used the facility to operate ultralight aircraft.

Infrastructure at the site includes a concrete runway and several taxiways. While the original airbase facilities are no longer used for standard air traffic, a new facility with a single runway was constructed in 2016. A 200-meter runway with two helipads and a single structure is located north of the main airfield. The eastern side of the base is dedicated to parade rehearsals and includes paved lots and training areas.
