Description
Muwaffaq Salti Air Base (MSAB), also known as Azraq Air Base, is a Royal Jordanian Air Force installation situated in Azraq, Zarqa Governorate, Jordan. Its history as a landing ground dates back to 1918 when T. E. Lawrence utilized the site during World War I for aircraft supporting operations toward Syria. The modern air base began construction in 1976, with initial squadrons (No 1 and No 11 equipped with Northrop F-5A/B and F-5E/F) deploying in November 1980. The base was officially inaugurated on May 24, 1981, and named in honor of Lieutenant Muwaffaq Salti, who was killed in action against the Israeli Air Force in 1966. Initially, it hosted Mirage squadrons from 1997 to 2007. Currently, the base is home to the Royal Jordanian Air Force's 1st, 2nd, and 6th Fighter Squadrons, all operating the General Dynamics F-16 Fighting Falcon. The 2nd Squadron also serves a dual role, providing tactical conversion training for new F-16 pilots. In addition to Jordanian forces, the base has hosted international units, including the Belgian Air Component's F-16s between 2014 and 2015 as part of Operation Inherent Resolve. The United States has undertaken significant expansion and upgrade projects at MSAB since 2019, including new aprons, a cargo marshaling yard, and a new air traffic control tower, aiming to establish a more permanent presence. The base is also reported to host MQ-9 Reaper drones and is partly operated by the U.S. Air Force's 407th Air Expeditionary Group.
