Description

Naval Support Facility Diego Garcia is a British Indian Ocean Territory facility utilized by the Royal Navy and leased to the United States Navy. Located on the atoll Diego Garcia in the Indian Ocean, its construction began in 1971 and continued until 1976, with the facility becoming operational in 1976. The base's establishment involved the forced expulsion of the local Chagossian population. The lease was renewed in 2016 until 2036. The facility's mission is to provide logistic support to operational forces deployed in the Indian Ocean and Persian Gulf. It is owned by the UK Ministry of Defence and operated by the United States Navy and Royal Navy. Camp Thunder Cove, operated by both US and British Armed Forces, is part of the facility. The base's elevation is 4.1 meters above mean sea level. It features a single concrete runway, designated 13/31, measuring 3,659 meters. Key units stationed at the facility include Naval Support Facility Diego Garcia, Maritime Pre-Positioning Ship Squadron Two, Naval Computer And Telecommunications Station Far East Detachment Diego Garcia, and various detachments from the US Space Force and Air Force, as well as British Forces British Indian Ocean Territories and Naval Party 1022. Historically, the base has supported significant military operations, including the deployment of B-52 Stratofortress bombers during the Gulf War in 1990 and B-1, B-2, and B-52 bombers for operations in Afghanistan and Iraq starting in 2001 and 2003, respectively. Bomber operations from the base ceased in 2006. Civilian contractors, such as KBR and Serco Inc., provide base operations support and operate systems like the Ground-based Electro-Optical Deep Space Surveillance (GEODSS).
