Description
Nea Anchialos is located in the Magnesia regional unit of Thessaly, Greece, on the Pagasetic Gulf. The site is situated southwest of Volos and north of Almyros, positioned along the Athens-Lamia-Volos national highway.
The location has a history of habitation dating to the 6th millennium BC and is built upon the ruins of the ancient city of Pyrasos. Pyrasos served as an active harbor and featured a temple of Demeter and Kore before joining the conurbation of Phthiotic Thebes in the late 4th century BC. The site remained a center of activity through the Roman period and into the early Byzantine era. Following a fire in the late 7th century, the city declined and was eventually eclipsed by the nearby port of Halmyros. The modern settlement was established in 1906 by Greeks from the Black Sea town of Anchialos.
The area hosts the Nea Anchialos National Airport.
