Description
Niagara Falls Air Reserve Station, also known as Niagara Falls Air Force Base from 1955 to 1971, is an Air Force Reserve Command military installation. It is operationally gained by Air Mobility Command and is located adjacent to Niagara Falls International Airport in New York. The station is the sole remaining 'federal' USAF installation in the state, distinct from Air National Guard installations.
The base was initially established as Niagara Falls Airport in 1928 as a city-owned municipal airport. During World War II, Bell Aircraft Corporation completed a manufacturing plant adjacent to the airport in 1941, and the 3522d Army Air Force Base Unit managed the airfield. The Bell Modification Center, one of 21 built by Materiel Command, operated at the airport starting in 1942, leading to airfield improvements. Naval Air Station Niagara Falls was established in 1946, and jurisdiction later returned to a civilian agency, though a USAF joint-use agreement was made for Air Force Reserve and New York Air National Guard use.
The 90th Reconnaissance Wing was assigned in 1946, followed by other reconnaissance units and the 107th Fighter Group. Air Defense Command later assumed jurisdiction. Niagara Falls Air Force Base was formally established by 1955. The 914th Troop Carrier Group, now the 914th Air Refueling Wing, assumed command of the installation from active duty units in 1971. The 107th Attack Wing of the New York Air National Guard is also stationed at the base, having undergone several mission changes, including aerial refueling and unmanned aircraft operations. Three Army Reserve units, the 277th Quartermaster Company, 1982nd Forward Surgical Team, and Alpha Company, 865th Combat Support Hospital, are also present. The base operates with three runways: 10L/28R (2,994.9 meters, Asphalt/Concrete), 6/24 (1,581.3 meters, Asphalt), and 10R/28L (1,210.6 meters, Asphalt). The base continues to operate as a dual-use facility.
