Description
Located in Karachi, Sindh, the facility was established in 1929 as the Karachi Aerodrome, later known as Drigh Road Airport. During World War II, the installation functioned as a transhipment base for United States Army Air Forces units supporting the Tenth Air Force in eastern India and Burma, and the Fourteenth Air Force in China. The Air Technical Service Command operated facilities for receiving, assembling, and testing aircraft before deployment to combat units. The site served as a maintenance and supply depot, while the Air Transport Command conducted cargo and passenger operations through the location.
The facility is currently operated by the Pakistan Civil Aviation Authority and serves as a hub for Pakistan International Airlines and multiple private carriers, including airblue, Fly Jinnah, and SereneAir. It houses the headquarters of the Civil Aviation Authority and serves as the central node for the national carrier's maintenance network. Stationed organizations include engineering departments and technical training centers.
Infrastructure consists of the Jinnah Terminal complex and several hangars. The Ispahani Hangar provides capacity for wide-body and narrow-body aircraft, supporting airframe overhauls and technical checks. The facility is capable of hosting aircraft types including the Airbus A380, Boeing 777, and Antonov An-225. Additional infrastructure includes a cargo village, a flight kitchen, and an air traffic control facility. The site is equipped with aircraft engineering and overhauling facilities that provide services for both domestic and international operators.
