Description
PAF Base Kohat is located in Kohat, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Pakistan. Commissioned in 1922 as Royal Air Force (RAF) Station Kohat, the installation was established by the British to address regional security in the Northern and Western frontier areas. During the 1920s, the base functioned as an administrative and maintenance wing for fighter-bombers, hosting Nos. 27 and 60 RAF Squadrons equipped with Westland Wapitis. Infrastructure constructed during this period included a headquarters building, supply hangars, and an armory. In 1938, the station hosted No. 16 and No. 17 Squadrons.
During World War II, the airfield served as a staging post for RAF and Indian Air Force squadrons during their deployment to the Burma front. Infrastructure was modified during this period, including the extension of the landing field in 1939. Following the independence of Pakistan in 1947, the Royal Air Force withdrew its units, and the installation came under the command of the Pakistan Air Force (PAF).
The base is operated by the Pakistan Air Force and functions as a training facility for airmen. Historically, the site maintained a dual role as both a flying and training base; however, following the withdrawal of No. 9 (Fury) Squadron in 1961, the installation transitioned to its current primary training mission in 1963. Infrastructure at the site includes aircraft hangars, an armory, a control tower, and an officer's mess.
