Description
PAF Base Rafiqui is located in the Jhang District of Punjab, Pakistan, on the outskirts of Shorkot. The facility was established in 1968 as a satellite station named PAF Shorkot following a 1966 survey by Air Headquarters to expand infrastructure and provide an alternative to the base at Sargodha. The station was activated during the 1971 Indo-Pakistani War, during which it hosted No. 23 Squadron and its F-6 aircraft. In 1973, the installation was designated a Main Operating Base and renamed in honor of Sarfaraz Ahmed Rafiqui, a fighter pilot from the 1965 Indo-Pakistani War.
The base is operated by the Pakistan Air Force under the Central Air Command and hosts the 34th Tactical Attack Wing. Stationed units include No. 14 Squadron "Tail Choppers," No. 25 Squadron "Eagles," No. 27 Squadron "Zarrars," and No. 50 Squadron "Saf Shikan." The base also houses No. 83 SAR Squadron "Kites." During the 2025 India-Pakistan conflict, the base was targeted by missile strikes, with air defense systems engaged for interception.
Infrastructure at the installation supports tactical attack and search and rescue operations. The airfield features an asphalt runway. The base geography has been modified through development projects that established orchards, nurseries, and plantations across the previously barren terrain.
