Description
Panghyon Airport is located near Panghyon-dong in Kusong, Pyongan-bukto. The facility functions as a site for missile testing and the development of unmanned aerial systems. It was the location of the first successful test-launch of the Hwasong-14 intercontinental ballistic missile in July 2017. U.S. analysts have also identified a missile base in the vicinity of the airport associated with the testing of Hwasong-10 missiles.
The airfield serves as a center for the research and development of North Korea's domestic unmanned surveillance vehicles. Operations at the site include the testing and development of the Saebyeol-4 and Saebyeol-9 unmanned aircraft, as well as the development of loitering munitions. Satellite imagery from 2023 onwards shows expanded research and development activity, including the presence of explosion craters.
Infrastructure includes a concrete runway and a full-length parallel taxiway equipped with earth revetments. Multiple taxiways connect the runway to hangars. While some aeronautical charts indicate a second north-south runway, the paved area may function as a taxiway.
