Description
Qionglai Air Base is a People's Liberation Army Air Force (PLAAF) air base located in Qionglai, Chengdu, Sichuan province, China. It is situated in the northwestern part of the Sichuan Basin. The base is currently under the Western Theater Command. The 4th Transport Air Division, including its 10th and 12th Air Regiments, operates Shaanxi Y-9 and Xi'an Y-20 military transport aircraft from this base.
Constructed in 1943 during World War II, the air base was initially used by the United States Army Air Forces (USAAF) 462d Bombardment Group. It was known as "Kiunglai Airfield" (A-5) and served as one of four B-29 Superfortress bases in China. From this location, the 462d Bomb Group staged bombing missions against Japan, flying from India. Supplies for the base were transported from India over "The Hump" due to Japanese control of coastal seas. On June 15, 1944, the group participated in the first American Air Force attack on the Japanese Home Islands since the Doolittle raid. B-29 raids on targets in Japan, Formosa, and Manchuria continued until February 1945. Notable missions included targeting the Japanese aircraft industry and the main Japanese Army supply base at Hankow in December 1944, using incendiary bombs. The commander of the XX Bomber Command, General Curtis LeMay, received assistance from Mao Zedong, including permission for a radio relay station and an emergency landing field. USAAF operations at Kuinglai Airfield ceased in April 1945 when B-29 bombers were relocated to bases in the Mariana Islands, and the airfield was subsequently transferred to Chinese authorities. The air base was utilized in 2013 to support recovery efforts following the Lushan earthquake.
