Description
RAF Feltwell is a Royal Air Force station located in Norfolk, England, approximately 10 miles west of Thetford. Constructed in 1936, the airfield became operational in 1937. During the Second World War, it served as a heavy bomber station for the Royal Air Force. Post-war, it hosted RAF Thor Missiles from 1958 to 1963, followed by the RAF's Officer Cadet Training Unit from 1963. Since the 1960s, the station has been utilized by the United States Air Force, specifically the United States Air Forces in Europe – Air Forces Africa. It is currently under the administrative control of the 48th Fighter Wing.
RAF Feltwell primarily functions as a support site for regional AAFES logistics and serves as a housing estate for USAF personnel stationed at nearby RAF Lakenheath and RAF Mildenhall. It also hosts the Mathies Airman Leadership School for USAF personnel in the UK and airmen stationed at Stavanger Airbase. Additionally, the base contains the Army and Air Force Exchange Service's sole furniture store in the country, as well as a middle school and offices for the Department of Defense Education Activity. The main operational unit stationed at RAF Feltwell is the 73rd Intelligence, Surveillance, and Reconnaissance Squadron, assigned to Space Delta 7 of the US Space Force, which was reactivated in 2020 from the former 18th Intelligence Squadron. The base previously hosted the 5th Space Surveillance Squadron from 1989 until its inactivation in 2003. Recent notable events include drone incursions in November 2024, leading to the deployment of RAF Regiment personnel and counter-UAS systems.
