Description

RAF Shawbury is a Royal Air Force station located near Shawbury in Shropshire, England. The station was first used for military flying training in 1917 by the Royal Flying Corps during the First World War, operating several aircraft types. It closed in May 1920 and the land was returned to agricultural use. The station was reactivated in February 1938 as a training establishment, initially for No. 11 Service Flying Training School and No. 27 Maintenance Unit. During the Second World War, it prepared pilots for operational squadrons, primarily with the Airspeed Oxford, and in 1944 became home to the Central Navigation School. Post-war, the School of Air Traffic Control moved to Shawbury, forming the Central Navigation and Control School. No. 27 Maintenance Unit continued operations until 1972. In 1976, No. 2 Flying Training School took over basic and advanced helicopter training. In 1997, the Defence Helicopter Flying School (DHFS) was established, providing helicopter pilot training for all three UK armed services. From 2016, the UK Military Flying Training System (UKMFTS) contract led to the introduction of Airbus H135 (Juno HT1) and H145 (Jupiter HT1) helicopters, replacing older aircraft. The DHFS was re-badged as No. 1 Flying Training School in February 2020. RAF Shawbury's mission is to provide a safe and efficient airfield environment to support commanded, lodged, and parented units, and to deliver wider Defence and RAF tasks. It hosts No. 1 Flying Training School, which provides basic helicopter pilot training for the RAF, Royal Navy, and Army Air Corps, using Juno HT1 aircraft. This school includes 2 Maritime Air Wing (comprising No. 660 Squadron AAC and 705 Naval Air Squadron) and No. 9 Regiment (comprising No. 60 Squadron RAF and No. 670 Squadron AAC). The Central Flying School (Helicopter) Squadron provides Qualified Helicopter Instructor and Qualified Helicopter Crewman Instructor training. The School of Aerospace Battle Management, part of the Defence College of Air and Space Operations, moved to Shawbury in August 2019. The station also houses an Aircraft Maintenance and Storage Unit, operated by FB Heliservices, for long-term reserve and disposal of RAF aircraft.
