Description
Rickenbacker Air National Guard Base is an Ohio Air National Guard installation located near Columbus, Ohio, at Rickenbacker International Airport. The base is named after aviator Eddie Rickenbacker. It operates as a tenant of the Columbus Regional Airport Authority, sharing the facility with commercial airlines and other civilian aircraft operators, indicating its dual civilian and military usage.
The base's history dates back to the 1940s when it was constructed as Lockbourne Army Airfield, serving as a U.S. Army Air Forces training base during World War II. It transitioned to an Air Force base in 1948, following the establishment of the United States Air Force. The installation was known as Lockbourne AFB from 1948 to 1974, and subsequently Rickenbacker AFB from 1974 to 1980. On April 1, 1980, the facility was transferred from Strategic Air Command and the active duty Air Force to the Air National Guard, where it remains operational.
Rickenbacker ANGB is currently home to the 121st Air Refueling Wing (121 ARW), an Air National Guard unit operating under the United States Air Force Air Mobility Command. Other tenant activities include OH-121, a Civil Air Patrol squadron, the Ohio Army National Guard's Army Aviation Support Facility #2, and various Navy Reserve and Marine Corps Reserve units. The base features two main runways: 5R/23L, measuring 3,688.6 meters (12,102 ft) with an asphalt/concrete surface, and 5L/23R, measuring 3,627.7 meters (11,902 ft) with an asphalt surface. The base's elevation is 226.7 meters (744 ft) above mean sea level.
