Description
Ärna Air Base, also known as Uppsala Air Base, is located northwest of Uppsala, Sweden. The facility is operated by the Swedish Air Force. In 2009, the Swedish Armed Forces initially planned to phase out the base's military airport unit and transfer the aerodrome to a private operator by July 2010. This plan was reversed in December 2009 when the Supreme Commander announced that military operations would continue, citing a lack of feasible alternatives for the flight operations.
Since October 14, 2021, the Uppland Wing (F 16) has been based at Ärna Air Base. The site serves as a military aerodrome for the Swedish Air Force. Between 2004 and 2018, the facility was the subject of a proposal by Uppsala Airport AB to introduce commercial aviation, specifically low-cost and charter flights. In 2011, the Environmental Court recommended the government decline this application due to environmental impact. The proposal for commercial flight operations was formally withdrawn in June 2018.
