Description
Samjiyŏn Airport is located in Samjiyŏn City, Ryanggang Province, North Korea, in the vicinity of Baekdu Mountain. The facility was constructed during the 1980s. It was originally built to support a ski center project initiated by a South Korean company, though the venture was ultimately unsuccessful.
The airport functions as a dual military and public facility. Air Koryo operates flights between the site and Pyongyang Sunan International Airport. These operations primarily facilitate the transport of tour groups to regional landmarks, including the birthplace of Kim Jong-il and the Baekdu Mountain area.
Infrastructure at the base includes an asphalt runway and a full-length parallel taxiway. Satellite imagery identifies entrances to underground bunkers at the facility. The airfield hosts an inventory of older Soviet-designed aircraft, including multiple MiG-15 fighters positioned in sidings adjacent to the runway. Ground assets at the site include various utility vehicles and jeeps.
