Schriever Space Force Base, located approximately 10 miles east of Peterson Space Force Base near Colorado Springs, Colorado, is a United States Space Force installation. The base's history began with groundbreaking in May 1983, initially known as the Consolidated Space Operations Center (CSOC). It became operational in 1985 as Falcon Air Force Station, with the 2nd Space Wing relocating there and taking operational control of the Air Force Satellite Control Network. In June 1988, it was redesignated Falcon Air Force Base. On January 30, 1992, the 2nd Space Wing inactivated, and the 50th Space Wing activated at the base. The installation was renamed Schriever Air Force Base on June 5, 1998, in honor of General Bernard Schriever, a pioneer in American ballistic missile programs. On July 26, 2021, it was renamed Schriever Space Force Base to reflect its role in the Space Force mission. The base is controlled by Space Base Delta 1 and is home to the 50th Space Wing, which provides command and control for over 170 Department of Defense warning, navigational, and communications satellites. It also houses the Missile Defense Integration and Operations Center and the U.S. Air Force Warfare Center. Building 400 at Schriever SFB serves as the main control point for the Global Positioning System (GPS). The base is staffed by over 8,100 active duty and guard/reserve personnel, civilian employees, and contractors. Future plans include hosting Space Delta 15, set to be fully operational by summer 2027.
