Description
Sdot Micha Airbase, also designated Wing 2 or Area 209, is an Israeli Air Force (IAF) missile base and depot located in the Jerusalem District. Situated in central Israel near the moshav of Sdot Micha, the facility extends approximately 13 km from southeast to northwest. Established in 1962 by Benjamin Peled, the base occupies land where the villages of Al-Burayj, Sejed, Jilya, and Qazaza were located prior to 1948. Construction of missile fields at the site began in late 1967. During the 1973 Yom Kippur War, Jericho missiles at the base were reportedly prepared for operational use.
The facility is operated by the IAF and hosts Air Wing 2. Stationed units include 150, 199, and 248 Squadrons, which operate Jericho intermediate-range (IRBM) and intercontinental ballistic missiles (ICBM). The Israeli Air Defense Command also maintains Arrow 2 and Arrow 3 missile batteries at the installation.
Infrastructure consists of underground launch facilities and storage depots. The base lacks a conventional runway or visible heliport. Mobile missile systems are housed in bunkers dug into limestone hills, accessible via reinforced doors. The northern sector contains 14 such caverns and the southern sector contains 9, providing capacity for mobile launchers. A separate, high-security area northwest of these positions contains four bunkers for warhead storage. The site also includes a test stand for rocket engines.
