Description

Soto Cano Air Base, also known as Palmerola International Airport, is a Honduran military base located approximately 8 kilometers south of Comayagua, Honduras. It became operational in 1940, relocating the Honduras Air Force Academy from Toncontin. The base serves as a dual-use facility, accommodating both military and public aviation. It is home to the Honduran Air Force and the Honduran Air Force Academy. The United States military also maintains a presence at the base, with Joint Task Force-Bravo (JTF-B) headquartered there. JTF-B comprises U.S. military personnel, U.S. civilians, and Honduran civilians, working across various support commands including the 612th Air Base Squadron (ABS), Army Forces Battalion, Joint Security Forces, Medical Element, and the 1st Battalion, 228th Aviation Regiment. While not a U.S. installation, the United States Department of Defense funds approximately 96% of its annual operation and maintenance costs. Historically, the U.S. government utilized Palmerola as a base for foreign policy objectives in the 1980s. Currently, the U.S. military uses Soto Cano as a launching point for humanitarian aid missions across Honduras and Central America. The base features a single asphalt runway, 17/35, measuring 2,441 meters (8,009 feet) in length. Efforts have been made since 1990 to expand its civilian aviation capabilities, with commercial cargo flights authorized and discussions ongoing regarding the full transfer of commercial passenger flights from Toncontín International Airport.
