Description
Chengdu Taipingsi Airport was constructed between 1939 and 1944. During the Second World War, it was a base for the Republic of China Air Force and the US Army Air Forces' Fourteenth Air Force, including the 'Flying Tigers'. The base served a role in the air defense of Sichuan. On January 22, 1942, a combined force of Chinese bombers and fighters, along with American fighters, departed from Taipingsi to attack the Japanese-occupied Gia Lam Airport in Hanoi. A historical stone roller, used for compacting the runway during its initial construction, is preserved at the site.
The airfield is currently a military base operated by the People's Liberation Army under the Western Theater Command. The facility was utilized to support disaster relief operations following the 2008 Sichuan earthquake and the 2010 Yushu earthquake. Due to the urban expansion of Chengdu, the air base has been identified for potential relocation, although no specific timeline has been established. The air base features a main runway measuring 2,580 by 45 meters and a separate, smaller runway measuring 690 by 20 meters, suitable for aircraft like the Antonov An-2.
