Description
Tho Xuan Airport, also known as Thanh Hoa Air Base or Bai Thuong Air Base, is located in Sao Vang town, Tho Xuan District, 45 km northwest of Thanh Hoa city. Formerly designated as Sao Vang Airport, the base was established in 1968 to serve as a forward staging facility for Vietnam People's Air Force (VPAF) MiG aircraft. During 1972, the installation and its runway were the targets of multiple aerial bombardments by United States B-52s, Navy A-6s, and fighter-bombers.
The Vietnam People's Air Force currently operates the installation as a joint military and civilian facility. It hosts the 923rd Fighter-bomber Squadron, which operates Sukhoi Su-30MKK aircraft. Infrastructure to support civil aviation was integrated in early 2013, enabling the base to facilitate domestic commercial flights. Carriers operating at the site include Vietnam Airlines, VietJet Air, Bamboo Airways, and Pacific Airlines, with destinations including Ho Chi Minh City, Da Nang, and Can Tho.
