Description

United States Fleet Activities Sasebo is a United States Navy base located in Sasebo, Japan, on the island of Kyūshū. The base provides facilities for the logistic support of forward-deployed units and visiting operating forces of the United States Pacific Fleet and designated tenant activities. Sasebo has functioned as a naval base since 1883, when it was established by the Imperial Japanese Navy. During World War II, the Imperial Japanese Navy had approximately 60,000 personnel working in the dockyard and associated naval stations. Following the war, the U.S. Marine Corps' Fifth Division landed at Sasebo in September 1945, and U.S. Fleet Activities Sasebo was formally established in June 1946. During the Korean War, Sasebo served as the primary launching point for United Nations and U.S. Forces, facilitating the flow of ammunition, fuel, and supplies. After the Korean War, Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force ships began homeporting in Sasebo alongside the U.S. Fleet Activities, which continued to support U.S. Seventh Fleet ships. The base provided support to the Seventh Fleet during the Southeast Asia war. In the mid-1970s, it was designated Naval Ordnance Facility Sasebo, but on July 4, 1980, it reverted to its original name. U.S. Fleet Activities Sasebo played a logistics role in Operation Desert Shield/Storm in 1990–91. The base was expanded as a result of the East Asian foreign policy of the Barack Obama administration. The base is currently controlled by the United States Navy and is jointly owned by the United States of America and Japan. Main units stationed there include Commander Amphibious Squadron 11 and Commander Mine Countermeasure Squadron 7, along with various forward-deployed ships.
